As the numbers of fines and data breaches increase, experts already predicted that 2020 will prove to be a decisive year for organisations and their GDPR compliance efforts. Last year, studies revealed that ever since the GDPR’s enforcement, many organisations have yet to reach a strong level of compliance. As fines and data breaches look over the shoulders of data-driven businesses of all sectors, let’s take a quick look into how the facts and figures describe this ongoing race for compliance.

Research carried out in 2019 aimed to identify businesses’ readiness for GDPR. Along with that, the study also identified the delays organisations had when wanting to reach the level of compliance they hoped for. The research mainly focused on businesses that encountered customer data privacy concerns, the losses faced from data breaches, and the current practices in reaching GDPR compliance.

Out of 3,200+ security professionals working in different companies across 18 countries, the results showed that:

The 29% of organisations that felt they were still behind on their efforts, expressed a few obstacles that hindered their efforts. Other mentioned challenges were:

Everyone's "in it, to win it."

Recent reports indicate that a number of SMEs feel the GDPR doesn't necessarily apply to them. However, with the ever increasing GDPR fines being issued to businesses of all sizes and sectors, it definitely suggests otherwise. Research carried out by GDPR.eu in 2019 looked into how SMEs across the EU fared in their journey towards GDPR compliance. Most SMEs involved in the study understood the importance of GDPR compliance and how paramount it is to prepare for it. However, the research did reveal that there were still work to be done.

Most organisations stated that, contrary to what was first predicted by smaller businesses before the GDPR was enforced, most respondents saw more positive outcomes from being compliant. Many respondents believed that the idea of the GDPR "slowing down the growth of their business" was a myth. As a result, business growth along with customer satisfaction increased when companies took more GDPR compliant initiatives.

Overall, the study suggested that despite the delays and problems, a majority of organisations saw the regulation as an opportunity, rather than an obstacle

And we're here to help organisations take that opportunity.
